Vitalik Buterin: Speed Race Over, Security Now Priority for Ethereum zkEVMs

Vitalik Buterin has declared the race for speed in the zero-knowledge Ethereum era concluded, shifting the primary focus for developers toward security and formal verification.

In a recent post on X, Buterin congratulated the ZKsync Airbender team on reaching a new milestone. While acknowledging the technical achievement, he stated that “the fight for speed is definitively won.” His message to teams building zkEVMs—tools that use mathematics to prove Ethereum transactions—was clear: focus fully on security.

Three Goals for Formal Verification

Buterin outlined three specific goals that formal verification should address in the next phase of Ethereum’s development. The first goal is proving that the mathematics underlying the proofs matches the Ethereum specification exactly. This ensures that the mathematical logic used to validate transactions is identical to the rules defined by the Ethereum protocol.

The second goal is establishing a hard maximum on the prover cost for the amount of gas in a block. According to Buterin, a prover that incurs excessive costs for heavy blocks may push smaller operators out of the market, thereby hurting decentralization. By capping these costs, the network aims to keep participation accessible to a broader range of node operators.

The third goal centers on the security of the proof system itself. Buterin noted that a proof that is fast but incorrect is dangerous. As Ethereum’s roadmap leans more heavily on zero-knowledge proofs to check blocks, these structural safeguards are becoming critical to maintaining the integrity of the network.

Ethereum Price Action

On the markets front, Ethereum (ETH) is trading near $2,365 on the daily chart. The asset is down approximately 15% from its late September high near $2,800.

Technical analysis indicates that ETH has fallen through the blue average at $2,490 and the cyan average at $2,550. It is currently sitting at the orange average near $2,360. The next support level is identified as the black average near $2,305, close to the recent low of $2,313.

Market indicators suggest sellers currently have control. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is near 38, which is close to oversold territory. Analysts note that a move back above $2,490 would be the first sign of recovery. Conversely, a break below $2,305 could put the larger recovery trend since August at risk.

Why It Matters

This shift in development priorities affects the long-term resilience of Ethereum's scaling solutions. By prioritizing formal verification and cost caps, the protocol aims to prevent centralization among node operators and ensure that proof systems remain secure against mathematical errors. For users and developers, this means future zkEVM implementations will be judged on their reliability and accessibility rather than just raw throughput, potentially altering which teams succeed in the ecosystem.
