Blockchain Association CEO Summer Mersinger To Step Down In October

Leadership Change Announced for Washington Crypto Trade Group

Summer Mersinger, the chief executive officer of the Blockchain Association, will step down from her position on October 16. The organization, described as one of Washington’s most influential crypto trade groups, announced that Mersinger will remain with the group as an adviser through the end of 2026 to assist with the transition process.

Kristin Smith will assume the role of interim CEO on October 17. Smith is a long-time figure in the organization, having served as its first employee when the Blockchain Association launched in 2018. She held the position of chief executive until 2025, when Mersinger took over in June.

Mersinger’s Regulatory Background and Tenure

Mersinger’s tenure at the Blockchain Association has coincided with significant developments in U.S. digital-asset policy. Her time at the helm included the passage of new stablecoin legislation and the issuance of detailed guidance from federal regulators. The Blockchain Association credited Mersinger with increasing the group’s engagement with lawmakers and agencies during this period.

Before joining the Blockchain Association, Mersinger served as a commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Her background in federal regulation provided a foundation for navigating the complex landscape of U.S. digital-asset policy. The leadership change occurs during an active period for U.S. digital-asset legislation, a time when crypto lobbying in Washington has shifted from defensive arguments against enforcement to debates over specific rulemaking.

Interim Leadership and Future Challenges

Smith, who currently serves as president of the Solana Policy Institute, will lead the association in the interim. The Blockchain Association has begun the process of identifying its next permanent chief executive. The incoming leader will inherit a complex regulatory agenda, including ongoing debates around securities classification, decentralized finance (DeFi), tokenization, prediction markets, and stablecoins.

Additionally, the next CEO will need to manage the dividing lines between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the CFTC, two agencies that have historically had different approaches to regulating digital assets. Congress has spent much of the year debating broader market-structure legislation, a process that will continue under the new leadership.

The transition marks a significant moment for the industry as it seeks to establish clear regulatory frameworks in Washington. The association’s ability to maintain its influence during this leadership change will be closely watched by both industry participants and regulators.

Why It Matters

The Blockchain Association is a key voice in shaping U.S. digital-asset policy. A leadership change during a critical period for legislation could impact the pace and direction of rulemaking. The new CEO will navigate complex issues like stablecoins and DeFi, affecting how digital assets are regulated and adopted in the U.S.
