Relocation of 60 Positions Announced
Bitcoin Suisse, a pioneer in Switzerland’s Crypto Valley, has announced plans to relocate up to 60 positions from its headquarters in Zug to Bratislava, Slovakia, or Vietnam. The move affects up to half of the company’s current Swiss-based workforce. This restructuring marks a significant strategic pivot for the firm, which is transitioning from a specialized crypto trading and custody provider to a global wealth manager.
Employees were briefed on the changes during a town hall meeting held on Friday morning. The company stated that the relocation primarily involves back-office and administrative roles. Bitcoin Suisse told Finews that the first layoffs will take effect before the end of the year. The exact number of positions to be cut or transferred will be finalized following a 10-day consultation period, which is currently underway.
Cost Efficiency Drives Restructuring
CEO Andrej Majcen stated that the decision is driven by cost efficiency. He noted that the same services can be delivered far more cheaply in Bratislava and Vietnam. Majcen emphasized that the restructuring is not tied to the current downturn in the cryptocurrency market. He stated that the firm has ample financial cushion to weather the current market conditions.
“In the past, our focus was primarily on Switzerland. Now, international growth is our priority,” Majcen said. The company, founded in 2013, originally built its reputation on crypto trading and custody services. It later expanded its offerings to include staking and lending. The new strategy aims to leverage this crypto expertise into broader wealth and asset management, targeting wealthy private clients, family offices, and institutional investors.
Regulatory Expansion and Future Plans
Bitcoin Suisse has been expanding its regulatory footprint in preparation for this international growth. The firm secured a MiCAR license in Liechtenstein, obtained digital-asset and investment licenses in Bermuda, and received full approval from Abu Dhabi’s regulator over the summer. These licenses support the company’s goal of serving a broader international client base beyond its domestic Swiss market.
Despite the relocation of staff, Zug will remain the company’s headquarters, and the Bitcoin Suisse brand name will remain unchanged. The company said it remains open to acquisitions in Switzerland. Additionally, Bitcoin Suisse plans to build out a new location in Vietnam in the coming years. No further details on specific departments or individual roles were disclosed in the initial announcement.
Why It Matters
This restructuring signals a broader trend among Swiss crypto firms to diversify beyond retail trading into institutional wealth management. By relocating administrative roles to lower-cost jurisdictions like Bratislava and Vietnam, Bitcoin Suisse aims to improve margins while expanding its regulatory reach in Liechtenstein, Bermuda, and Abu Dhabi. For investors, the pivot suggests a focus on long-term asset management services rather than short-term trading volumes.
