Upbit Adds BFC to Won and USDT Markets

Two New Pairs, One Supported Chain

Upbit, the South Korean exchange that leads the domestic market by trading volume, began matching BFC orders against the South Korean won and USDT at 13:45 KST (04:45 UTC) on Sept. 10. The two pairs join an existing Bitcoin-denominated market on the platform, where BFC had last closed at 0.00000015 BTC — a reference figure Upbit translated to roughly 15.96 won and 0.1788 USDT for the purpose of setting opening restrictions, not as a confirmed post-listing price.

The exchange published its listing notice shortly before the scheduled start and noted that trading could be pushed back if deposit and withdrawal channels failed to build sufficient liquidity in time. No delay was announced in the information available at publication.

Deposits and withdrawals are routed exclusively through the Bifrost Network. Upbit warned that sending BFC over any other chain, even one supported by a different exchange or wallet, would not be credited automatically. Recovering those funds could involve a lengthy return process and hinges on whether the transaction can be identified and technically retrieved.

Standard Launch Controls Applied

As with other recent Upbit listings, the exchange imposed a short window of order restrictions. Buy orders were frozen for approximately five minutes after the open, and sell orders priced more than 10 percent below the prior close were blocked for the same interval. The 10-percent boundary was calculated from the BFC price in the existing BTC market.

For the first two hours, only limit orders were accepted. Market orders and conditional order types were disabled throughout that period. Upbit clarified that these controls set no permanent price band; once the temporary limits lapsed, BFC could trade at any level the order book supported.

Bifrost’s Protocol and the Role of BFC

Bifrost positions itself as multichain middleware built on the Substrate framework, with Ethereum API compatibility that lets developers plug in standard Ethereum tooling. Within that ecosystem, BFC is a utility token used to pay fees on BiFi, the project’s multichain DeFi layer.

The network also runs a Bitcoin-centric DeFi product called BTCFi. Per Bifrost’s own documentation, the protocol lets users lock Bitcoin as collateral and mint BtcUSD, a dollar-pegged stablecoin deployable in supported lending and yield applications. Bifrost frames BtcUSD as cross-chain infrastructure meant to extend Bitcoin-backed liquidity across DeFi venues. Those are project descriptions, not guarantees of return; the underlying lending, collateral, bridge, and stablecoin mechanisms carry their own smart-contract and liquidation risks.

Compliance Checks and a Same-Day REZ Listing

Upbit said BFC transfers must satisfy South Korea’s Travel Rule. Deposits originating from exchanges not on the platform’s approved virtual-asset service provider list may be rejected, and personal wallets must clear Upbit’s ownership-verification step before funds are credited. The exchange reserved the right to request source-of-funds documentation for large deposits of unclear origin, a check it folds into its broader AML and customer-verification workflow.

Upbit’s operator, Dunamu, recently gained approval to query South Korea’s administrative data system, giving the company an additional channel for identity verification. On the same day, Upbit also announced a USDT pair for Renzo’s REZ token — an independent listing whose trading was shifted from 15:00 KST to 18:00 KST while keeping Ethereum as the deposit network.

With the opening restrictions now expired, BFC trades under the normal order types available in Upbit’s KRW and USDT markets. The exchange has not set a further listing-related deadline and has not signaled that an Ethereum or other-chain version of the token will receive deposit support. Upbit stated it may suspend services if it detects network instability, security issues, or compliance problems.

Why It Matters

BFC holders and DeFi users tracking Bifrost's BTCFi product now have direct won and USDT liquidity on South Korea's highest-volume exchange, a market that has historically moved prices for newly listed tokens. The single-chain deposit requirement and Travel Rule checks mean Korean users face tighter onboarding than on offshore venues. Sustained volume in the new pairs will determine whether BFC gains a durable pricing reference outside the thin BTC market it previously occupied.
