Bitcoin ETF Outflows Erase Monday Gains as Fed Meeting Looms

ETF Reversal Wipes Out Recent Inflows

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net outflow of $450 million on Sept. 15, according to data from Farside. This single-day withdrawal erased the $159 million net inflow recorded in the previous session. The reversal marks a significant shift in fund flows, which had seen modest accumulation in recent trading days.

The $450 million outflow extends a broader trend of capital leaving the products. Over the six completed sessions since Sept. 8, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have experienced a net withdrawal of $753 million. These figures track creations and redemptions in the exchange-traded funds but do not specify investor identities or whether the underlying Bitcoin was sold directly on the open market.

Spot and Perpetual Selling Deepens

Market structure data from Glassnode’s Week 38 report indicates that selling pressure has intensified across both spot and derivatives markets. At the time of reporting, Bitcoin traded near $75,900, a price level close to the lower end of the range in Glassnode’s latest weekly snapshot.

Glassnode data showed the spot cumulative volume delta at negative $142 million. This figure fell below the negative $115 million lower statistical band, suggesting that aggressive spot selling has become the dominant flow. Meanwhile, the perpetual cumulative volume delta dropped to negative $605 million, significantly below its negative $233 million lower band. The disparity between spot and perpetual deltas highlights active positioning in the derivatives market, where sellers are exerting substantial influence.

Futures Positioning Remains Elevated

Despite the outflows, futures open interest remained high, easing only slightly from $37 billion to $36 billion. This level is still above the $36 billion upper statistical band, indicating that leveraged positions remain large enough to magnify future price moves. Long-side funding payments rose to $1.4 million, a figure that stayed within normal statistical ranges. This suggests that while open interest is elevated, the cost of holding long positions has not yet triggered a forced liquidation cascade or a sharp reset in funding rates.

The Federal Reserve began its two-day policy meeting around the time of the ETF reversal. The central bank’s decision on interest rates remained pending at the reporting cutoff. Market participants are watching how the macroeconomic backdrop interacts with the specific dynamics of the crypto asset class. The relationship between ETF redemptions and direct exchange selling is described as unresolved in current analysis, though the concurrent drop in price and rise in negative volume delta suggest a correlation in market behavior.

Market Vulnerability Ahead of Decision

Analysts describing the current market condition note that it appears vulnerable rather than broken. Spot distribution has deepened, and derivatives sellers are active, but the structure has not yet collapsed. A constructive response to the Fed’s decision would likely involve price stabilization, an improvement in spot flow, and an orderly reduction in open interest. Conversely, a bearish scenario would combine renewed spot selling, a sharper decline in open interest, and a reset in funding rates.

The convergence of ETF outflows, negative volume deltas, and pending central bank policy creates a high-sensitivity environment. Positioning remains large, meaning the next significant market move could be amplified by the existing leverage in the derivatives market. Investors are monitoring the interplay between institutional fund flows and macroeconomic signals as the Fed concludes its deliberations.

Why It Matters

The combination of significant ETF outflows and negative volume deltas indicates that institutional and leveraged demand is currently insufficient to support price stability. With the Federal Reserve’s policy decision pending, the market faces a binary outcome where macroeconomic signals could either alleviate or exacerbate the current selling pressure. Elevated open interest means that any sharp price move is likely to be amplified by liquidations, posing higher risk for holders of leveraged positions and spot assets.
