Leadership Transition Confirmed by Co-CEO
Kaiser Ng, the chief financial officer of Binance, is leaving the cryptocurrency exchange to pursue a new venture. Binance co-CEO Yi He confirmed the departure in a statement obtained by Reuters on Saturday. The announcement marks the end of Ng’s tenure at the firm, which has spanned more than five years.
In the statement, Yi He noted that a transition plan had been implemented over the last half year to facilitate the handover. “Kaiser Ng has decided to pursue a new venture after more than five years at Binance, with a transition plan implemented over the last half year,” Yi He said.
Ng has served as Binance’s CFO since January 2022. Prior to joining the exchange, he held the position of Chief Financial Officer at crypto exchange Kraken for about five years. His background in managing large-scale digital asset operations was central to his earlier hiring by Binance.
Justin Yek Named as Successor
Justin Yek will replace Ng as Binance’s finance chief. Yek most recently served as the vice-president of finance at Airwallex, a global payment and treasury provider. The initial statement did not specify a start date for Yek’s new role at Binance.
The timing of the leadership change is notable given recent security challenges faced by the exchange. The announcement comes a little more than a week after a major hack impacted Binance’s operations.
Aftermath of Record $6.3 Billion Hack
Cointelegraph reported that hackers stole approximately $6.3 billion from Binance on Oct. 29. This incident is currently the largest cryptocurrency theft on record. In the aftermath of the breach, Binance stated it would absorb the financial losses rather than pass them on to its customers. The company assured users that their funds remained secure despite the incident.
The $6.3 billion breach has drawn significant attention from law enforcement and security experts. The FBI and several independent researchers attributed the attack to North Korean hackers. They cited technical markers and operational patterns consistent with state-sponsored cyber groups from the region.
North Korea has denied responsibility for the hack. The attribution remains a subject of ongoing investigation. While the official statement regarding Ng’s departure does not explicitly link his exit to the security incident, the timing has drawn attention to the stability of Binance’s leadership team during a critical period for the industry.
Ng’s departure follows a period of significant scrutiny for the exchange. The transition to Yek marks a new phase for the exchange as it works to address security concerns and manage financial oversight following the record-breaking theft.
Why It Matters
The departure of a senior finance executive at one of the largest crypto exchanges occurs immediately after a record-breaking security breach. This leadership change impacts how Binance manages its financial reserves and regulatory compliance during a period of heightened scrutiny. Investors and partners are watching to see how the new CFO, Justin Yek, handles the aftermath of the $6.3 billion loss and the ongoing attribution disputes involving North Korean state actors.
